when is the best time of the day to pollinate cucumbers

Female flowers contain a small ovary in the center. The female flower will have a small fruit at the base of her stem. When hand pollinating cucumbers, use only fresh male flowers. Flowers open in the morning and pollen is only viable during that day.

So similar to AGP

Have seen the first females starting to come now. Plants are very easy to grow. Bugs like to eat the leaves.

Do we just keep one cucumber going like the pumpkins? Should we try to grow it on the main? Should we let the plant get to a certain size before we keep one? Never done one before. My plant looks healthy, starting to grow cucs now.

I have grown two on the same plant a few times, setting the second one once the first one is ripening. The second one was always considerably smaller.

Basically I just grow a main vine and get rid of all the side vines, as do most giant cuke growers. I try to grow the cucumber about 3 to 4 feet up the main (possibly on a side shoot).

Moisten the leaves of the cucumber plant as much as possible to prevent mosaic virus. Then spray a 1 part milk/9 part water solution on the plant once a week to prevent mildew which is caused by wet leaves.

Interesting that the 1st sets do best. Have first sets now on two plants.

How long do they grow for?

They seam to grow fast.

It depends on the temperature how long they grow. This year we had several days in the 90-100s and they are maturing much faster and are at least 3 or 4 inches shorter. In cooler weather they just keep on going. It takes ages before they are totally ripe. If they are green now they should make Port Elgin.

They plump up real fast.

Fun to grow them.

Primary sets seam to consume all assimilates. Secondary sets are left starving.
