A few of us have participated in a contest like this on Big Pumpkins and it has been a lot of fun.
They've changed their format a bit so we've decided to run our own competition with the old format.
Growers will be picked at random so new growers will be paired with veteran growers and an intermediate grower.
With comradery and support from your team members it should be beneficial to everybody, but especially to the new growers. We have great, knowledgeable growers in our club that would love to help new growers advance.
If you don't want to email me you can sign up on this post.
Post your name and personal best tomato here and your in.
A question I've had a couple times now is how much is the entry fee.
Answer, there isn't one. this contest is free to all GVGO members
sign us up Zeke.
Ok your in thanks
I signed up. Had a few 5.95 Konieczny seeds lying around, so might as well put to use.
I am not sure I understand how it works. Are we competing for our teams best, or best average, and also, is there prizes? I have never grown a tomatoes, for competition, but would like to try this year, and may join. Was just wondering about those 2 things.
Hi Noah, everybody that registers will be put in categories A B or C dependent on their PB tomato. You've never grown so you'll be a C grower for sure. Once we have all the entries we'll do a random drawing putting one person from each category on a team. So teams will consist of 3 growers and each is allowed to weigh 2 tomatoes for a total of 6 tomatoes per team.
And yes the GVGO has said they'll provide yet to be determined prizes for the contest. The main goal is to have fun, meet some new people and learn from some of the GVGO's best growers.
Let me know if you want to enter.
I’ll enter but I’ve never grown giant tomatoes so I have no idea what I’m doing but it sounds like fun so I’m in. Dan Clement
I was planning on taking the year off from tomatoes but it would be fun to grow a few plants. Please sign me up Zeke. Thanks.
Okay, I think I will enter, but I will only be able to have one official weight, and one unofficial weight weighed, is that okay? Also, how do I enter?
OK I've got all 3 of you. Thanks for entering
I'll join in! I've never grown a giant tomato, but I'm willing to give it a try.
Thanks Jeff
Noah De Visser, personal best=non-existent.
Sounds like fun, hope i can get something weighed at lest.
I would like to sign up to participate in the GVGO Tomato contest. I only have a 4-H personal best, no weigh-off personal best.
Simon Southwell
Thanks Simon, your in
Our goal is 30 people to make 10 teams. We're still short by 11
Remember everybody this is a free contest!
Hi Zeke, sign me up. Looks like I'll have some time on my hands this spring to get things started. PB was around 2 lbs.
