So here's my line up for the year, under a month until planting! Will plant 1 of each of the pumpkins as well as the 2 unlabeled which are my own 719.5 (1608 Bryson×952.5 McCallum). The squash will plant both of the 652.5 McCallum and one of each of the rest. I will plant 1 of each of the field pumpkins (not for another month and a half). Will plant 2 of the long gourds, and all 3 bushel gourd seeds. I already started watermelon, may be a little early but I'll never know if I don't experiment. This cutie from my 93 DMG UOW (202.5 crews×202.5 crews) popped today around 40 hours in paper towel method, just getting ready to put it in the soil. I've got 1 more 93 pounder in paper towel and 2 80.5 De Visser, and 2 160.5 McKenzie. Hopefully will have 4-5 sprout. My plan is to grow a total of 3 watermelons, 3 field pumpkins, 2 Bushel gourds, 1 long gourd, 5 pumpkins, 3-4 squash, 3 sunflowers, 3 corn, and 9 tomatoes. Hoping for a new PB in all the categories, depending on how this year goes, maybe the 4000 pound club, and GVGO master grower, and it's looking good for weigh offs this year so I should be able to weigh all of them! Good luck to all in their growing season!

Has there been an announcement about the 2022 Veggie of the year?

So, most 200+ pound melons are grown way farther south than Canada. Tennessee, South Carolina, Kentucky, etc. However, a handful of Canadians have done it (Leonard, Hunt, Mailey, Black, and Crews). I was wondering what your top tips for growing at a colder climates would be. I had amazing seeds ( 202.5 Crews) but the plant just never took off like it needed too. How do you get that amazing early plant growth with colder temps? Thanks!

Congrats to all the new personal bests beaten! Those were some pretty intense pumpkins near the end! Also, I was wondering if anyone knew what happened with Carl Graham's pumpkin earlier today?

I have a lot to catch up on. First here's a cabbage on July 3rd. Same one July 10th July 24th, going to seed. Such a shame, because it was over 40 inches at the start of June and ended up 54 by the time it was seeding. I guess I planted too early, so next year. Probably bring it as an exhibition just to get a weight.

I pollinated this 1608 Bryson on the 29th, 11 ft out with 18 secondaries. However there is a damage spot from wind blowing a stick against it. I then pollinated this flower 2 ft farther with 21 secondaries on July 3rd. Will the damage on the first one cause problems? I want to position the fruit soon so I need to know which to keep. Thanks!

I had been reading through old posts, and I can across this one. https://www.gvgo.ca/forum/grower-discussion/pollination It has a lot of science behind it, but it is saying that the size of plant won't really a fact the maximum fruit size. It appears, to me, to say that the number of cells in the fruit, is the only thing that really matters, when determining fruit potential. Since we can't actually see the number of cells, I think that this is even more luck, than anything else, but I was wondering your opinions. The other comment I have, over 100 2000 pounders have been grown, and I am pretty sure they were all in over 500 sq ft. This means people get more lucky ina larger area? My opinion is that the fruit has a determinant ceiling for weight, and this can't be changed, which is why fruit growth taper late in the season, but I think that the plant size is needed to help the fruit continue to grow until that "ceiling", and not taper out quite so quickly. It also says that there is no proof that giant varieties need giant plants to grow big, but they are better at creating a sink for the growth. This would also implies they need bigger plant, because the bigger the plant, the greater the sink can be. Also, it says that the pumpkin with the best plumbing, no tthat ist solar panels wins the weigh off. While I agree that the plant size doesn't directly create fruit size, the plant does help that plumbing move the energy faster. If you have amazing plumbing, all focused into one sink, it can't do a thing without the water pressure at the other end. Plants run on photosynthesis, without leaves, they cannot get the energy to cycle through the plant, and grow fruit. With that in mind, it makes more sense that an established plant, even terminated after the fruit starts would be better. If the fruit is 12 feet out, and on a large plant, it already has the potential for its final weight. Then, if you grow the plant until day 15, it hasn't started to be a big sink yet, and will not yet compete with the leaf growth, as long as you have the nutrients. Then termination of growth will create a sink in the fruit, and let it take over. You would then have bigger newer growth, that would let you keep that pumpkin moving towards its "ceiling", for a longer time. So I think that the plant size, at pollination, is not a definition, but more of guidelines, for the fruit weight, and will be greatly influenced by how well the plant continues to push the fruit later in the season. This is just my 2 cents. I would love it if someone else could chime in with their opinion on the subject.

Looking for a few giant rutabaga seeds to try next year. I tried this year, but realized that normal seeds just won't keep growing long enough. So, I was wondering if anyone knew where I could get a few seeds for giant ones. Thanks!

I have already been thinking about next year's prep. My patch us almost empty, so I wanted to start, and prepare pumpkin and squash areas for next year. I have a guaranteed 100 dollars, and hopefully will win a bit from last nights weigh off, but won't see those results until next Friday. I will hopefully be able to get some horse manure for free, an dis already have 30 Kg of triple 16 granular, and some water soluble for next year. Wondering what you would suggest I get. Thanks!

A; Is it running? B: Do the weights have to be official? I have a pumpkin that will get weighed, unofficially, tommorows, and has a chance of breaking my PB, by a bunch. It is estimating 240, and is likely to go heavy. My PB is only just over 200, so was wondering if it would be able to be an entry. Thanks!

I was wondering if this was going on like it was before? I wanted to buy a few tomatoes, and maybe squash seeds, and wondered if they would be able to be picked up at the weighoff, or if they were all getting mailed this year. Thanks!

First submission, 2.02 pounder for team 10. Will probably not be a final entry, as I have three healthy plants with healthy fruit.

I did a basic home soil test a few days ago, and I saw that my soil contains low amounts of phosphorus and potassium, and very low amounts of nitrogen. I also have a slightly basic psh. There were some recomendations on what to add to the soil, but that would be really expensive, and I only have about $125 for soil amendments, I was wondering what I would be able to add, as either compost, or as fertilizer, that would cost very little. I have a patch that is about 1200 square feet, and the amounts I was supposed to add were almost a pound per 100 square feet, of nitrate of calcium, and triple super phosphate, and muraite of potash, and none of those are that cheap.
